April is National Cancer Control Month and we Highlight the Union for International Cancer Control

Each month on the LI-COR BIO Cancer website, we highlight that month’s cancer observances plus one organization that is working to fight cancer (through fund raising or research), to support those affected by cancer (families, patients, friends, the community), or to find new treatments for cancer. April is an important and busy month for cancer observances. Overall, the month is observed as National Cancer Control Month.

The organization highlight of the month is the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC). It was founded in 1933 after cancer researchers recognized the need to share knowledge and expertise globally. It has become a leading non-governmental, non-profit, non-political, and non-sectarian cancer organization, with a mission to eliminate cancer as a life-threatening disease for future generations. It’s an organization worth getting to know!

In addition, April 1 – 7 is National Testicular Cancer Awareness Week. Testicular cancer is a cancer that forms in tissues of one or both testicles. Testicular cancer is most common in young or middle-aged men. There will be an estimated 8,590 new cases in the US in 2012 and 360 deaths attributable to testicular cancer. for more information on this cancer and others, see the National Cancer Institutes website.

Also in April, we observe the 10th Annual National Young Adult Cancer Awareness Week, April 2 – 8. This site has informative videos, videos made by cancer survivors, a section called vital resources, information about several cancers, and more. Their motto “Power. Strength. Knowledge.” speaks volumes!
