Kansas State University ranks as one of the nation’s “cutting-edge schools,” according to a guidebook that pinpoints today’s hottest majors and the innovative colleges that offer them. K-State was the only school in the Big 12 to make the cut in Kaplan Publishing’s You Are Here: A Guide to Over 380 Colleges and Unlimited Paths to Your Future. Here’s a quick profile: http://www.k-state.edu/welcome/
"The LiCor DNA Analysis machine is fabulous. This way I get to actually see and analyze myself what is going on with my samples. It gives me a good picture of the population dynamics of the deer in Kansas. I can see for myself how the deer are related and I can predict the spread of Chronic Wasting Disease. Getting to see what genes they have and how they are different from each other and seeing the variations within each data set is really cool.”
– Alyssa Mattox, Senior in Biology at Kansas State University
“The machine has helped us by allowing students to see the process from start to finish, from DNA extraction through amplification to visualization. Prior to owning the DNA analysis machine, students had to send out all of thei r samples to be done in another lab by someone else so it created a little black hole in their knowledge about the process of sequencing DNA or fragment analysis. That’s been changed now because have this machine which allows the students to participate in every step of the process and get hands on experience."
– Samantha Wisely,Genetic susceptibility and animal movement patterns of sympatric populations of mule deer and white-tailed deer in western Kansas, Samantha Wisely, PI, Jack Cully, Lloyd Fox, co-PI’s. October 2008-September 2009. $22,324, US Geological Survey Center for Wildlife Disease Research.
The matching funds were provided by assorted individual independent grants and various university funds. However many individuals are willing to help match a grant when they hear that it will benefit students. Look for friends or alumni that are dedicated to the school's mission.
