Applications for the Odyssey Imager
Spotlight on...
Dr. Jane Gray is head of the Equipment Park at the Cancer Research UK Cambridge Research Institute in Cambridge, UK. Her core lab serves about 200 individual users, and provides a wide range of instrumentation for cancer research. Dr. Gray provides training and technical assistance for the facility's equipment, and assists with troubleshooting and optimization. One of the instruments she uses is the Odyssey® Infrared Imaging System.
Dr. Gray likes instrumentation that is reliable, accurate, and easy to use. She is "a big fan of the Odyssey. I like the fact that you can multiplex, particularly for Western blotting; that's really important because then you can have your protein of interest and your housekeeping protein on the same blot without the need to strip." She also appreciates the stability of the fluorescent signals. "Compared with the chemiluminescence signal, which decays over time, once you get the fluorescent probe onto the membrane, you can actually re-scan the membrane and keep it for months or even years with no obvious loss of signal." Dr. Gray is pleased with the high sensitivity and "very wide linear dynamic range" of the Odyssey Imager.
In a core facility, the cost of running and maintaining the instruments is an important factor. The low running cost of the Odyssey is a great fit. "It's a lot cheaper than doing chemiluminescence assays because you're not buying substrate or film. You haven't got the running costs of darkrooms and all of that continuing. And it's also quite easy to use." Dr Gray has trained researchers to use the Odyssey for several different applications, including quantitative Western blot analysis, In-Cell Western™ immunofluorescent assays, cytokine arrays, and EMSA.
Dr. Gray is very pleased with the technical support she receives from LI-COR. "They've always been very helpful whenever we've had any questions or problems, especially in terms of troubleshooting. "The technical support is very good and I've never had any problems."
