"The importance of the partnership between LI-COR and TWLC is to create the hands-on, authentic, real experience for young people who are interested in careers in the fields of biology, medicine, or medical research."
"The participants in our program have the opportunity to use LI-COR's DNA sequencer to see what it would be like to be a research biologist."
- Dr. Katherine Bihr, TWLC Vice President and Executive Director
"I decided to take the Biotechnology class during my senior year. As a result of taking the class, I was more determined to pursue a career in the biomedical field. Having the DNA sequencer in the classroom allowed me to experience a true laboratory environment."
- David Dinh, TWLC Alum and second-year at University of California at San Diego
Tiger Woods Learning Center (TWLC) is using LI-COR's Model 4300 DNA Analysis System as a primary teaching tool in several of its hands-on courses, including the Biotechnology elective.
TWLC first opened in Orange Country, California, offering after-school, weekend and summer programs that show young students how they can turn their personal interests into an exciting, meaningful career. As part of its Career Orientation Program, fifth-grade students have the option of taking Crime Lab 101. This course is a series of lessons that teaches students about forensic science as a career and gives them hands-on opportunities, such as fingerprinting, DNA analysis, microscope use, and chromatography.
LI-COR's Model 4300 DNA Analysis System is used in Crime Lab 101, as well in the Biotechnology elective course and other independent hands-on experiments. The 4300 System is based on LI-COR's proven, highly sensitive infrared fluorescence technology. It is rugged and reliable, making it ideal for classroom use. Solid-state technology allows for continuous or intermittent use without the need for routine maintenance.
