LI-COR seeks to facilitate the use of IRDye 800CW imaging agents in clinical studies for detection of disease and its progression, and for monitoring of treatment and drug efficacy. To learn more about LI-COR's Clinical Translation group, please click here.

LI-COR® Infrared Fluorescence Technology

For more than 40 years LI-COR has produced instruments capable of accurate, reproducible measurements needed to understand subtle changes in our environment. The research required to design these instruments created the foundation of LI-COR's understanding of optical properties of life systems, which led our engineers to imagine innovative uses of infrared laser technology.

LI-COR engineers have spent the last two decades creating solutions for the life science community. LI-COR instruments and reagents used by researchers worldwide are based on near-infrared fluorescent (NIR) technology that is proven to result in highly quantifiable and sensitive results.

November 1, 2011 - LI-COR introduces the Odyssey® CLx Infrared Imaging System as the latest addition to its line of imaging systems. The Odyssey CLx offers all of the advantages of the Odyssey infrared imaging technology that have become the industry standard for Western blot technology over the past decade. In addition to the proven Odyssey technology, the Odyssey CLx features a new AutoScan function that simplifies Western blot imaging with one-button image acquisition. The AutoScan function uses intuitive technology to find the correct, unsaturated image each time, every time, saving valuable time by eliminating the need to calibrate the instrument to find the correct manual intensity.

Infrared Laser Technology

Unique to LI-COR's Biotechnology product line is the use of infrared laser excitation. This method of detection consistently out-performs systems that use LED and visible white light (Fig. 1).

Benefits of infrared laser technology include:

  • Interference from light scatter and autofluorescence is minimal, resulting in reliable data with high signal-to-noise ratios and superior sensitivity.
  • Infrared laser excitation results in the highest signal-to-noise ratios, and the best detection sensitivity available with a fluorescent system.
  • Infrared lasers offer high-speed detection with increased sensitivity when compared to systems that use LED and visible white light.

Figure 1. Improved performance using infrared lasers. A) Infrared lasers deliver excitation light in the narrow wavelength band desired, unlike LED or white light sources. B) Leakage of excitation light (yellow shading) increases image background. C) LI-COR filtering technology dramatically reduces excitation light leakage, for decreased image background and sensitive detection of low abundant targets.

LI-COR's laser technology has the best detection at the optimum wavelengths. When compared to other instruments using infrared fluorescence, the 700 nm and 800 nm channels within the Odyssey family of imagers are always the most sensitive.

Figure 2. Animal tissue absorbs visible light. Hemoglobin (Hb) and other tissue components strongly absorb visible light. In the NIR region, where IRDye agents are detected, tissue absorbance is dramatically reduced. Above 820 nm, light absorbance by water begins to increase

Infrared Dye Technology

LI-COR offers a complete line of high-quality, water-soluble IRDye® infrared dyes for use in many protein analysis applications, as well as in vivo small animal imaging. For in vivo imaging, LI-COR offers the BrightSite™ line of small animal imaging agents that allows researchers ready-to-use optical imaging agents that make it easy to begin animal studies immediately. Simply administer the agent, then image with any small animal imaging equipment with appropriate 680 nm or 800 nm filter sets (Fig. 2).
