The LAI-2000 Plant Canopy Analyzer has two components: the LAI-2050 Optical Sensor and the LAI-2070 Control Unit.
The LAI-2050 Optical Sensor has a unique design composed
of:
• “fish-eye” lens with a hemispherical field-of-view (zenith
cutoff angle of 74 degrees)
• mirror to reflect the radiation received by the lens
• filter (490 nm) which minimizes the contribution of radiation scattered
by the foliage
• set of lenses
• custom designed detector featuring five separate silicon detectors, each
responding to a different set of zenith angles

The LAI-2070 Control Unit contains the electronics necessary to measure, record and compute the final results as well as a 64Kb memory for operation and data storage. There are also five connectors at the top of the control unit: two connectors are used to connect one or two LAI-2050 Optical Sensor(s) (depends on the operating mode – see more in Making Measurements), two BNC connectors used to connect (optional) LI-COR radiation sensors, and an RS-232 connector for file transfer to a computer. The LAI-2070 Control Unit is powered by 6 D cell batteries. The LAI-2000 also includes a set of View Caps used under certain sky conditions to limit the optical sensors’ azimuthal field of view. |
