LI-8100 Analyzer Control Unit (ACU)
All LI-8100 system configurations are built around the Analyzer Control Unit (ACU). This weather tight enclosure houses system components for gas analysis, chamber control, data storage, and communications:
  • CO2/H2O Infrared Gas Analyzer (IRGA)
  • Auxiliary Sensor Interface
  • Wireless Communications
  • Onboard Data Collection

Infrared Gas Analyzer

The analyzer in the LI-8100 is an absolute, non-dispersive, infrared (NDIR) gas analyzer with a single path, dual wavelength detection system. The optical bench provides a CO2 measurement range of 0-3000 µmol/mol and an H2O measurement range of 0-80 mmol/mol. Pressure compensation and temperature regulation of the optical bench minimize zero and span drift. The optical path can be removed and cleaned by the user if necessary, without requiring factory recalibration.

LI-8100 Auxiliary Sensor Interface

Auxiliary Sensor Interface

Adding auxiliary sensors to the LI-8100 is enabled by an Auxiliary Sensor Interface that attaches to the side of the Analyzer Control Unit. The Interface enclosure is O-ring sealed and has connections for up to 4 thermocouples (types E, J, T, or raw) and 4 general purpose input voltage channels, any of which can be configured to measure soil temperature or moisture. Sensors can be powered externally or by the LI-8100 with a constant 5 VDC source. The Auxiliary Sensor Interface also has a 10.5-28 VDC input for use with external power.
Wireless Communications Enabled

Wireless Communications

The LI-8100 is Wi-Fi (802.11b) enabled, allowing for wireless communication with a compatible handheld PDA. The LI-8100 Interface Software for PalmŪ OS makes it simple to perform all setup and monitoring functions via wireless communication or with the included serial cable. LI-COR offers a complete handheld package, which provides everything you'll need to set up and monitor the LI-8100 with wireless communications, including a PDA.
DC power

DC Power

In single chamber configurations, the LI-8100 ACU is powered by either an internal battery (10.5-15 VDC, 3A max.), available from LI-COR, or a user-supplied DC power source (10.5-28 VDC, 3A max.) connected via the Auxiliary Sensor Interface. Batteries are rechargeable and provide about 3 hours of charge, depending on usage. With two battery connectors inside the LI-8100 case, batteries can be changed easily with uninterrupted operation by connecting a fully charged battery to one connector before removing the discharged battery from the second connector.
Onboard data storage with 128MB CF card installed

Onboard Data Storage

The LI-8100 has onboard flash storage available for data collection, compressed at an approximate ratio of 3:1. With compression, about 32 MB of data can be stored on the instrument. If more space is required for data logging, a compact flash card can be used as well. LI-COR includes an industrial grade 1 GB compact flash card, rated for high temperature.
