Gustavus Adolphus College Students Excel with Opportunities for Plant Research

Pamela Kittelson, Professor of Biology and Environmental Studies at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota, understands the benefits of scientific instruments in undergraduate education. Pamela was awarded a LEEF grant to purchase an LI-6400XT Ecophysiology Package in Spring of 2013. Since then, she’s used the instrument in lab exercises and undergraduate research.

Pamela uses the instrument to show students how plants respond to changes in environmental conditions in her plant physiology labs. “It is one thing to…

Researchers Measure Leaf Area Index in Grapevines with a Non-Invasive Method

Researchers Measure Leaf Area Index in Grapevines with a Non-Invasive Method

Nestled along Germany’s Rhine River in one of the world’s most distinguished wine regions, Geisenheim University has a particular mission for viticulture and enology research and education. Looking for an accurate, fast, non-destructive method for measuring leaf area index (LAI) in vineyards, Geisenheim scientists have been using the LAI-2200 Plant Canopy Analyzer from LI-COR Biosciences. Results were published in the American Journal of Enology and Viticulture (Döring et al., 2014).

Leaf Area Index and Viticulture

LAI, defined as the ratio…

On track toward success: Gustavus Adolphus College on strengthening its science program with securing external funds for new instruments to their institution

On track toward success: Gustavus Adolphus College on strengthening its science program with securing external funds for new instruments to their institution

Gustavus Adolphus College has a strong, well-regarded program in the sciences. Its quality, in part, is the result of securing high-quality scientific instruments, which provide exceptional research and educational opportunities for students, and a strong foundation for graduate school and jobs in industry.

LI-COR has played an important role in Gustavus’ success as it relates to instrumentation. It granted the College the first Genomics Education Matching Fund (GEMF) from LI-COR for a DNA Sequencer in 2002. In 2012, Gustavus was…
