Row Crops

Row crops are not randomly distributed in space, but a simple modified sampling strategy can be used to ensure that LAI is estimated accurately.

• Make measurements along a diagonal transect between rows.
• Four "below" canopy readings per transect are sufficient in most cases.
• A single "above" canopy reading is sufficient for each transect, unless sky conditions are changing rapidly.
• The most accurate measurements are made under stable, overcast sky conditions.
• Use the same view cap and orient the sensor in the same compass direction for all associated above and below readings.
