Survey Chambers

Two survey chambers are available: 8100-102 (10 cm) and 8100-103 (20 cm). Both chambers operate with a unique pneumatic system that contracts and expands a bellows to raise and lower the chamber over the soil collar. This automation eliminates soil disturbances that would otherwise occur with mechanical installation and removal of the chamber from the collar between sampling repetitions. The pneumatic bellows system raises the chamber between repetitions to allow for equilibration with ambient CO2 and H2O concentrations, before gently lowering again to perform another repetition. As a result, erroneous flux rates, induced by mechanical soil disturbance, are greatly reduced.

  • Unattended measurements for weeks or months at a time
  • Horizontal chamber drive mechanism (allows exposure of measurement area to natural microclimate)
  • Perforated baseplate (minimizes soil perturbations around measurement area)
  • Double gasket system to prevent leaks

LI-COR offers two long-term chambers (8100-104, 8100-104C) to make unattended measurements of diel and seasonal soil CO2 flux patterns. These chambers attach to either the LI-8100A (direct connection), or to the LI-8150 Multiplexer. Both chambers have undergone extensive testing throughout the development cycle to address the impacts of chamber design on CO2 efflux from the soil.

Designed for use with the LI-8150 Multiplexer, the 8100-104 and 8100-104C Long-Term Chambers are an economical, lightweight solution for multiplexed systems. The 8100-104/104C expands the capabilities of the LI-8100A System and provides an additional chamber options to measure both spatial and temporal variation of soil CO2 flux. The chamber has a lift-and-rotate drive mechanism that rotates the chamber to six configurable open positions.

  • 8100-104 and 8100-104C Long-Term Chambers use a lift-and-rotate drive mechanism that opens the chamber up slightly and then around horizontally to any of six open positions.
  • 8100-104/104C requires choice of 2 m or 15 m cable/hose assembly.
  • Auxiliary Sensor inputs are integrated into chamber for use in a multiplexed system.

Built-in Sensor Inputs

built-in sensor input

In a multiplexed system with 8100-104/104C chambers, auxiliary sensors are connected directly to the control panel of the chamber. The panel inputs allow for connection of up to three auxiliary sensors, such as soil temperature and moisture sensors offered by LI-COR. The sealed inputs each provide a DC excitation source and a 0-5VDC general input channel.
