LI-COR Offers Automated Cell Counter in the U.S.

October 20, 2009, Lincoln, NE: LI-COR Biosciences is now offering in the U.S. the NucleoCounter® NC-100™, for the precise and automated counting of mammalian cells in the laboratory. The NucleoCounter NC-100 is a compact instrument that fits perfectly in any mammalian cell laboratory performing research, quality control, or monitoring of production. LI-COR is offering the instrument in the United States only through a business agreement with Chemometec, which manufactures the NucleoCounter NC-100.

"Results from the NucleoCounter represent either total or viable cell concentration, depending on the sample preparation," says Tony Endozo, LI-COR product manager. "Researchers performing cell counting as part of their work will appreciate the functionality of this instrument because of its precision, ease of use and the time it saves."

The NucleoCounter NC-100 uses a disposable NucleoCassette containing immobilized propidium iodide (PI). When the NucleoCassette is loaded with the cell lysate the PI is dissolved and the cellular DNA is stained. After placement in the NucleoCounter the stained mixture is automatically transferred to the measurement chamber. Green light excites the PI-DNA intercalation and the red light emitted is registered in the CCD camera for correlation into a cell count.
