Soil CO2 Flux Research Presented at AGU
LI-COR presented new research on soil CO2 flux measurements at the American Geophysical Union annual meeting on December 5 – 9, 2005 in San Francisco, California.
Critical Considerations for Accurate Soil CO2 Flux Measurement introduces an automated, multiple-chamber solution to the problem of spatial and temporal variation of FCO2. The poster discusses how improperly designed chamber pressure vents can cause negative pressure excursions during windy conditions (Venturi effect), effectively overestimating FCO2. A new vent design is shown which maintains pressure equilibrium between inside and outside the chamber under calm and windy conditions.
Comparison of Two Systems for Measuring Soil CO2 Flux: the LI-6400 and LI-8100, presents data comparing measurement results with the LI-8100 system and the LI-6400 with 6400-09 Soil CO2 Flux Chamber. These instruments utilize different measurement methods to compensate for a reduced diffusion gradient inherent to the chamber accumulation method. The LI-6400 employs chemical scrubbers in a CO2 drawdown method; the LI-8100 allows CO2 to accumulate in the chamber, but compensates for the reduced gradient by using an exponential fit to the data. Results show that the two instruments gave substantially similar flux rates under the conditions tested.
