Sierra Wireless has confirmed reports of ‘Mirai’ malware infecting the AirLink® RV-50 and LS300 wireless gateways. If your gateway uses the default ACEmanager password and is reachable from the public internet, the malware can use the firmware update function to download and copy a version to the memory. The malware proceeds to scan for vulnerable devices, reports findings to a control server, and participates in a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack. The best indicator of the malware is abnormal traffic on TCP ports 23 and 48101. As stated in the bulletin, the recommended course of action to remove the malware is to reboot the gateway, change the default ACEmanager password to a secure password. We also recommend that you run the latest version of ALEOS software on the device (source.sierrawireless.com/resources/airlink/software_downloads/rv50/rv50-firmware-list/).

LI-COR eddy covariance systems can have several devices which uses the TCP/IP protocol and they are all connected to the one modem which has access to the internet. The port forwarding rule is setup in the modem, so that communications arriving through certain ports are forwarded to certain instruments.

For example the LI-7200 communicates over port 7200, the LI-7700 communicates overs port 7200 and the Sutron Xlite datalogger communicates over port 23. Port forwarding rules are setup in the modem such that communications arriving at the modem through a certain port is forwarded to the appropriate instrument. Some networks may block communications over certain ports because of security reasons and some internet service providers may do that also. The best solution to this problem is to get a list of ports which are not blocked by your IT department or service provider and use those ports in your port forwarding rule. Another way to check if you access certain ports from within your network is to use the site http://portquiz.net where you can put the port number after a colon along with the site name. For example, to check port 7200, you will type http://portquiz.net:7200 on your browser. If the port is open, you will see a web page which will indicate that you have a successful connection.
